What is Bisexuality?
Bisexuality can loosely be defined as feeling sexually attracted to both
genders. In real terms it means acting on this attraction and engaging in
sexual contact with partners of both sexes. Those who self-identify as
bisexual don't necessarily have to engage in sex; indeed, there are some
in the bisexual community who believe that simply saying you are bi makes
it so.
Bisexuality is quite common, although not much research has been done to
establish exact numbers. Kinsey's sexual research from the 40's and 50's
suggests that 15-20% of women and up to 46% of men may have bisexual
leanings at some point during their lives. However, the percentage of
people who live the bisexual lifestyle is much lower.
At present there is a growing bisexual community. These people identify
themselves as bi and work toward raising awareness of what it means to be
bisexual, and lobbying for political change.
